This memorial reinforces the horrors of which we are all aware, but it is worth an hour or two to pay respect to the 12,000 innocent lives that were taken. The markers represent the dignity of a tombstone and of being named. The Museum keeps their memory alive with records of what is know about each person. There is not a separate listing for the Holocaust Memorial so I am including it here as a relevant fact related to the Museum. Good to know how important Jewish people were for Frankfruts prosperity in the middleage and that this was the foundation for prosperity for Frankfurt and Germany for many centuries. Frankfurt has an enormous wealth of Jewish history, our association with the Rothschild and Bethmann families has left a rich legacy. So too the not so palatable Holocaust memories, yet Frankfurt is not shy at working hard to provide fitting tributes and memorials to the near 12,000 jews who were ´deported´from the city during the war years - never to return. To the best of my knowledge, this is one of the biggest Jewish museums in the world and houses some of the rarest items in the category. The good thing is that it was really quite for a museum of this scale and not many people were inside when I visited.

She eagerly accepted — and decided she would bring her Jewish friends from the laundry room with her. Irene Gut Opdyke was soon transferred to the town of Tarnopol, where she continued serving meals to German officers. There, she became friends with 12 Jews who worked in the laundry room washing the soldiers’ clothes. I had no idea how historical this area was and came away much better informed in a very accessible way.
The other Jewish Museum is closed at the moment and probably will not reopen until 2018. There is tight security to get in, but given the "present situation" this is very sensible. We had an audio guide on top of the entrance fee, but it is very cheap overall. At the end of the visit we asked for the key to the cemetery next door, and had a good wander around (the audio guide works there as well!). If you are into Jewish history, or even just history this is a must see in Frankfurt.
The new Jewish Museum in the historic Rothschild Palais reopens on October 21, 2020 with a new permanent exhibiton on Frankfurt's Jewish history since 1800. We also invite you to visit our Museum Judengassen at Battonnstreet 47 with the neighboring second oldest Jewish cemetery in Germany.
